Why We Built This Site
Illinois publishes phone information across many separate offices. The State of Illinois Telephone Directory covers state employees and agencies. Chicago runs its own employee phone directory and 311 service. Each of the 102 counties posts its own numbers, and the Illinois courts keep a statewide clerk directory. School districts, the state universities, and the public libraries all maintain portals of their own. Public-safety lines split between 911, 988, 311, 211, and regional State Police dispatch centers. Add the utility companies and the FCC and NANPA references for the state's 17 area codes, and the picture gets crowded fast. We pull together the lookup tools, contact methods, and reference data for each of these in one place.
What You Will Find Here
- Pages by phone topic: phone area codes, phone numbers, and phone codes
- Statewide directory contacts: state agencies, Chicago and Cook County, the courts, schools and universities, public libraries, major utilities, public safety
- Directory walkthroughs: how to use the Illinois state employee directory, how to navigate the school and campus directories, how to reverse-lookup an unknown caller
- Phone numbering reference: the 17 area codes serving Illinois, local exchange (NXX) prefixes, N11 service codes (211 / 311 / 911 / 988), vertical service codes, and toll-free prefixes
What We Cannot Do
This is a privately run reference site. We have no connection to any Illinois state agency, city or county office, school district, utility, telecommunications carrier, or directory operator. There are real limits to what we can help with:
- We cannot place calls on your behalf or connect you to a department
- We cannot change anyone's directory listing, add a number, or remove a listing
- We cannot verify the identity of someone who called you
- We cannot give legal advice or explain how a specific scam call applies to your situation
- We cannot guarantee that every phone number, area code, or directory link on this site is current right now
Only the originating office can confirm a current phone number or change a listing. For emergencies, dial 911. For a mental-health or suicidal crisis, dial 988.
